Fall Begins…In July?

I know it’s early. Hey, I hear ya! It’s not even the 4th of July yet, man. No, that’s tomorrow. Typically I don’t get into a fall mood until after the 5th. But this year, the weather has been fall-like, so I’ve been like, screw it. If I want to be in a Halloween/fall mood in July, so be it. So I went to Hobby Lobby and this is what I found, and I could be more unashamedly happy…

Halloween The Movie At Halloween Horror Nights!!!

That’s right, Boils and Ghouls, your favorite boogeyman is back! Michael Myers will be making an appearance at HHN in Orlando, this year. Myers originally appeared in 2009 at HHN Hollywood, in a house called: The Life and Crimes of Michael Myers, which covered most iconic scenes from the original films, and even a nod or two to Halloween 3.

Fans of the series have been waiting for this appearance of their favorite killer, in their favorite Halloween event on the East Coast, and now they have it!

The original film, which was made on a shoestring budget of $350,000 in 1978, went on to gross over $70 million at the box office. It was one of the first films to employ a Steadicam system, and was known for creating audience “empathy” with the killer by giving a first-person POV to the opening murder. It also defined classic Halloween trappings and customs for a generation, by creating a brooding, atmospheric tone which captured the spirit of the holiday.

The film is beautifully shot by Dean Cundey who would go on to shoot Romancing The Stone, the Back to the Future trilogy, and Jurassic Park, and is directed by Master of Terror, John Carpenter, who gave us Escape From New York and The Thing.

But the most iconic reach of the movie is not the amazing featureless mask that was created out of a Don Post Captain Kirk. It is the music. To kids that grew up in the 80’s, that music is Halloween. It is as iconic as the Star Wars or Jaws theme, and just as influential.


The idea that this pulsing, off-beat theme is going to pump through Universal Studios Florida is enough to make my heart palpate with giddy, galloping skips. This is one of my favorite all-time films, and I am so excited, I might not be able to contain myself. I hadn’t planned on going to Orlando, this fall, but I have been scouring travel websites, all damn day!

Here is a small taste of what the original 2009 Hollywood house was like. If this is any indication, we are in for one heck of a treat.

Look What’s Back At Michael’s!


I know it’s darn early, but I can’t help it. There’s something wrong with me. Every year at this time I have to wander Hobby Lobby and Michael’s and Party City, looking for the Halloween stuff. It really is some kind of illness, one that manifests itself in pumpkins, skeletons, and stupid childlike grins. And here we are, again. The season on witches is upon us and the trappings of said season are slowly infiltrating…. and I can’t stop grinning…
I know, it’s sick….





Fourth of July Shopping Only To Find . . . Halloween?

Yesterday I had to go into Hobby Lobby in order to pick up some 4th of July decorations for a float for our town’s local parade tomorrow.

I love Hobby Lobby, Michael’s, Party City, and JoAnn Fabric; any place that has holiday decorations. Usually they can be counted on for a nice dose of nostalgia and an injection of holiday cheer.

Today I was walking in, minding my own business, trying to find the patriotic stuff.

Luckily, it was all on sale.


They had two clearance rows of Independence Day. I quickly grabbed some garland, a few ribbons, and some poster banner.

3 Amazing Recipes From My Youth . . .

So it is the Fourth of July. Happy Independence Day. Holidays make me nostalgic for the carefree days of my youth.  We almost always were with family, where fifty or so kids would run around lobbing flaming flowers at each other and trying to brand each other with sparklers. In fact, I remember one year when a flaming flower was lobbed at my sister and caught in the back of her dress, turning her into a sort of human sparkler.

Good times.

So, in honor of the day where I used to attempt to blow my fingers off by holding firecrackers in my hand until the very last moment and then lobbing them high in the air until they blasted birds and squirrels out of the trees, I thought I would post a few recipes that made me happy as a kid.

I promise you, these recipes rock.


These cookies are awesome when gooey and hot , but in my never-to-be-humble opinion, they are even better the next day. I use Ghirardeli semi-sweet chips. Your taste buds will thank you.

1 cup Crisco

1 cup brown sugar

1/2 cup white sugar

2 eggs

2 tsp vanilla extract

2 1/4 cup flour with the 1/4 cup heaping

1 tsp salt

1 tsp baking soda

1 package of semi sweet chocolate chips

Cream Crisco and sugar.  Add eggs and vanilla and cream.  Add flour salt and baking soda in three portions, mixing after each.  Stir in chocolate chips.  Drop on the cookie sheet in small spoonfuls.

Bake at 375 for seven minutes. Do not over bake.

Hold up and shake five minutes, then put on cookie racks to cool.



This homemade ice cream is fantastic, creamy, and rich. Sometimes I add fresh peaches or strawberries to the mix before freezing. It works well with chocolate and even Matcha.

4 Eggs

1 Cup Sugar

1 Tablespoon Vanilla

1/2 Pint Whipping Cream

2 Cans Eagle Brand Sweetened Condensed Milk

Whisk about a cup of milk, the sugar, and the Whipping Cream in a heavy sauce pan. Heat on medium for about seven minutes, then remove from heat. In another bowl, whisk the eggs. Pour a bit of the hot milk mixture into the eggs and whisk. Pour that mixture back into the sauce pan, and continue to whisk for one minute.

Add the Vanilla and condensed milk.

Chill for one hour.

Fill the rest of the ice cream maker with milk until the line.

Freeze with salt and ice.



Is it too early to be talking about these cookies? I don’t think so. You don’t have to make these only at Halloween.  However  in my book, it is never too early to be talking about Halloween. In fact, next week I’ll go to Michael’s and check out their new Spooky Town houses.

1/2 Cup Butter

1 Cup Sugar

1 Egg

1/2 Tsp. Salt

2 Tsps. Baking Powder

2 Cups Flour

1/2 Tsp. Vanilla

Cream sugar and butter. Blend egg. Add salt, baking powder, and flour. Blend in Vanilla. Chill for 2 hours. Roll out with more flour and use cookie cutters to shape.

Bake at 400 degrees for 8 to 10 minutes until golden.

Make a glaze from 3/4 cup Powdered Sugar and 3 to 4 tsp. Water. Add a few drops of almond extract and whatever food coloring you want.
